ERASING is a conceptual tape music project based on recording, composed by Chinese musician Liu Yiwei. Released on March of 2019 by PlayRec Label Shanghai.
ERASING is willing to make a path for exploring the extension of time. The music was made deeply in the mood of passing and expecting, also a misty poetry from the collective memory of the generation.
Some sound sampling are come from national FM radio, portable field recorder, old classical music vinyl records and cassettes. These sounds passed through, or smashed on the magnetic head at a storm-like speed. In an infinite loop circle, until it is erased or scratched. Just like our lives.
I like the Lo-fi textures of old tapes. Tape is a kind of living soul in my concept.Sounding like a candle light, like Walter Benjamin's book Illuminations . The recorded recordings have a life cycle, and the sound will gradually disappear due to the time and storage method. The things which incomplete and changeable are giving me a lot of inspiration; for instance, using photographic film is a very beautiful process for me.
In 2017, I began to be interested and did many research in early electronic music methods, like Musique concrète and Electro-acoustic. I used the motor modified DIY tape recorder, tape stitching, echo delay etc. to create a lot of sounds on this record. I use it as a very potential music instrument.
Some field-recordings come from different places such as the Blue Mosque in Istanbul, the University of Shenyang, the countryside in Yunnan, and the highway in Xinjiang. These journeys are like a dyed memory, leaving some dream shapes on the canvas of sound. The last track called 1971, it is a sound enigma, which hides another song, leaving a mystery, hopefully one day you can hear it.
