“There was a time that I was really fascinated with modular synth. With a few knobs and patching some cables from one slot to an other, you can make some great sound and tone. But after a while, I thought I could not even afford a single module because it is way too expensive for me (and for that money I would rather invest in something else) and I felt I was too naive about modular synth at that time. Time flies. At the beginging of this year, I came across VCV Rack and it has opened a whole new universe in my experimentation with sound, timbre and tone in an inexpensive and flexible way. It is notable to say that when I started experimenting with VCV Rack, I finally understand the simple truth of electronic music: sculpting with electricity. And, VCV Rack is a virtual simulation of this sculpting process. Dedication (2018) reveals my experiementation in making sound in different way, at least it is something that I didn't do in the past. I am happy about these spontaneous results.”

B.1984. Edwin Lo is an artist and researcher form Hong Kong working with the practices and concept of sound and listening in various contexts and medium such as performance, writings, recording, video, installation and software/game.
Since 2008, his works are widely presented in various local and overseas exhibitions, festivals and residencies such as Hong Kong Sound Station (Hong Kong, 2009), Shenzhen & Hong Kong Bi-City Biennale of Urbanism Architecture 2009, FILE 2010 – Electronic Language International Festival (Brazil, 2010), EMERGEANDSEE Media Art Festival (Germany, 2010), Hong Kong InDependent Film Festival 2010 , White Walls Have Ears (Hong Kong, 2011), Uncharted – Braunschweig Project (Germany, 2013), RPM: Ten Years of Sound Art in China (United States, Hong Kong, and Shanghai, 2013), Around Sound Art Festival (Japan, 2014) and ‘Inside China’ (2014 – 2015) in Palais de Tokyo of Paris and K11 foundation of Hong Kong and Shanghai.

羅潤庭

PRL：
你在 Dedication 之前的很多作品经常是围绕具象的声音比如 field recording （【Auditory Scenes: Doumen】http://www.platinummetres.com/?/projects/Doumen/）展开的，这次是一张完全由电子合成器声音构成的唱片，能否谈谈契机？

Edwin：
當在剛開始 Play Rec Label 的時候, 王長存問過我有沒有電子原音音樂類型的作品。可惜當時我的創作節奏與進度都很慢, 而且也沒有太多想法, 所以一直都沒有類似的作品出現。我在很多年前想做一些跟 modular synth 有關的音樂, 但你要知道投入 modular synth 的世界需要有很多外在條件去支持, 其中對我來說就是錢與空間。在這兩個最主要的因素底下, 我沒有朝硬件的方向發展。直到我知道 VCV 這個開源的程序, 我便在今年花點時間去嘗試做一些跟以往不同的作品, 希望跳出既有的創作方式, 而最終效果出來覺得不錯, 便接洽 Play Rec Label。

PRL：
围绕电子合成器声音工作与围绕具象声音工作的不同之处，如果有的话？

Edwin：
一定有不同。在田野錄音或音景的語境之下, 創作的行為已經在錄音與聆聽當中已經開始, 怎樣去錄、怎樣去選取聲音、之後怎樣去剪輯也以是創作的一部份了。整個創作的過程中你很大程度上預計到最終創作的結果。而在電子合成 (或更確切說在 VCV) 的創作環境之下, 接上不同的虛擬模組, 很多的創作都是很直覺 (intuitive) 的。我一直對於 modular synth 沒有太大的概念, 而 VCV 提供了很多很有意思及有用的模組, 所以在整個創作過程中都是反覆的組合、實驗和嘗試, 而且有意思的是你在過程當中, 你是不能預計最終的結果。

PRL：
虽然发声来源由具象的声音换成了电子合成器，但 Dedication 中仍然保持了你作品中一贯冷静与诗意的感觉，这是有意为之还是本能导致？

Edwin：
首先感謝你(們)對我過去作品的意見。事實上當我在 VCV 做聲音時, 我沒有想過「怎樣維持自己風格」這個事情。反而我當時在想的問題是「如何利用電流雕塑出聲音 (sculpturing with electricity)」 這個問題上。這源於我跟 Jean-Claude Eloy 的在巴黎的一次討論, 他提到他第一個電子原音創作《Shanti》 (1972-73) 的創作過程時, 我想到的是他當時創作時的狀態跟我在 VCV 做聲音的狀況很像, 那就是那種自由地嘗試與實驗聲音的方式或工作環境。在過程當中, 我一直都在想我在 VCV 的環境中, 可以為我的創作提供幾大程度上的自由。

PRL：
Dedication 里的曲子有些片段让我想起 Éliane Radigue

Edwin：
謝謝。這個聯想令我意料之外。

PRL：
谈谈 Dedication 中的曲名？

Edwin：
01. Of Time and Energy (10'08)
這曲算是我在 VCV 的錄音中第一個比較完整的作品。其實名字就是呼應我對「利用電流雕塑出聲音 (sculpturing with electricity)」的想法。

02. Sushi Roll Lifting (33'52)
這曲的名字源自王長存一件有印有 “Sushi Roll Lifting” T-shirt。我覺得好有趣加上喜歡食壽司, 所以就用這個做名字。

03. Four Segments For Phill Niblock (39'44)
這曲由四段長音 (drone) 在組成。完成的時候我想起 Phill Niblock 在多年前在香港的現場演出, 所以以此向他致意。

PRL：
谈谈第三首「Four Segments For Phill Niblock」与 drone-based Minimalism 之间的联系？

Edwin：
其實當我在做第三曲的時候, 我想做到的是 Celer （https://celer.bandcamp.com）的音樂那種狀態。以 drone 來說, Celer 是影響我最深的。我一直都是他的音樂的支持者, 他也是我的朋友。他的音樂在整個ambient、drone 的體系中獨樹一格, 當時我希望通過這曲跟他的音樂有點閒接上的溝通。這曲原本創作的起點是這樣的, 但當完成整個作品的時候, 我卻想起 Phill Niblock 早幾年在香港的現場演出。當時來的人很少, 但 Phill 的音樂卻充滿能量以及具有一種精神性, 所以我以曲名「Four Segments For Phill Niblock」向他致敬。到了今年, 我很幸運地在香港Empty Gallery 聽到 Catherine Christer Hennix 的樂團演出, 令我重新以另一種的方式了解到極簡主義傳統與 drone 之間的關係, 令我印象深刻。

PRL：
最近好么，在忙什么？

Edwin：
最近還可以 (徐程、王長存, 你們好嗎?)。幾個月前由大學的半職工作重新回到自由工作的狀態 。最近完成了一些聲音的工作坊、一些劇場與影像作品的聲音設計, 現在要重回做自己作品的節奏。計劃好幾個作品都已經完成好兩個, 下年度會做一個跟 Jean-Claude Eloy 的研究 / 作品, 希望可以在下年有階段性成果。
